8. Leverage Compliance Schemes if Useful
As noted, authorized compliance schemes (often run by waste management companies or industry bodies)
can manage many aspects for you. They can: register you with the authorities, compile and submit your
data, ensure you meet PRN requirements, and sometimes even give guidance on how to reduce fees. In
return, you pay them an admin fee and the actual EPR costs. For businesses without internal compliance
expertise, this can simplify life. Ensure any scheme you use is approved for the UK Packaging EPR and that
you still get transparency of your data and cost breakdown.
9. Monitor and Train
Finally, treat EPR compliance as an ongoing program, not a one-off. Monitor regulatory updates (DEFRA
frequently updates guidance, as of April 2026, there have been multiple updates to de昀椀nitions and data
requirements). If new packaging lines or products are introduced, update your data collection for them.
Conduct internal training so relevant staff understand why they are gathering this data or
why design decisions are being made. A well-informed team will spot opportunities (like
“hey, if we change this label adhesive, we might avoid a Red rating”) and prevent
mistakes (like forgetting to log a particular type of packaging).
By following these steps, companies can build a robust compliance process. Next,
we’ll look at what EPR might cost your business, how it could affect 昀椀nances and
contracts, and how to manage those impacts.
