Reducing and Managing EPR Costs
The next section on strategic opportunities goes deeper, but from a 昀椀nancial perspective, the ways to
control costs include:
• Invest in Recyclability: Shifting packaging from Red to Green can directly cut fee rates by up to
50% over time (given the doubling of Red fees by 2028). While packaging changes might require
upfront R&D or retooling, the ROI can be quanti昀椀able in lower fees. For example, choosing a widely
recyclable plastic and making components easily separable can avoid large surcharges.
• Reduce Packaging Tonnage: Lightweighting or eliminating unnecessary packaging yields a double
bene昀椀t – lower material costs and lower EPR fees. Every tonne you remove is a direct saving of
whatever the fee per tonne is (plus you’re likely also saving on shipping and materials).
• Reuse Systems: If you can move to reusable packaging (especially B2B transit packaging) and
keep it in a closed loop, you may reduce the amount of “packaging placed on market” each year.
Some reusable packaging might be outside the scope of fees if it’s truly reused many times and not
disposed; however, be cautious: if it eventually is disposed by consumers, it still counts. There are
proposals to give credits for genuine reuse systems (and as noted, closed-loop recycling of your own
packaging can offset fees).
