Strategic Opportunities Under EPR: Reducing Costs,
Boosting Sustainability, and Positive PR
While EPR may seem like just an added burden, it also presents opportunities for companies to innovate,
save money in the long run, and strengthen their sustainability credentials. Here are ways logistics,
transport, and manufacturing 昀椀rms can turn EPR compliance into a strategic advantage:
1. Eco-Design and Cost Reduction Go Hand-in-Hand
EPR effectively puts a price on packaging pollution, use this price signal to drive smarter design. By making
packaging more recyclable and lightweight, you not only reduce your EPR fees but often also cut material
costs and shipping weight.
• Material Choices: Switch to materials that are recyclable and widely collected. For instance, use
PET, HDPE, or widely recycled PP plastics in place of less recyclable plastics or composite laminates.
Ensure paper/card packaging is pure and not plastic-coated (unless necessary). Avoid PVC or expanded
polystyrene, these are likely automatic Red rating in RAM. If you package in glass or aluminium, those
are recyclable but have other trade-offs (heavy or energy-intensive), so consider the whole picture.
• Simplify Packaging: Avoid multi-material mixes that can’t be separated. If you have a complex
package, ask “can we make this all one material?” Mono-material packaging is much easier to recycle.
For example, use a plastic bottle and cap of the same polymer family, or a paper box with minimal plastic
tape.
• Design for Disassembly: If multiple materials are
needed, design them so the consumer can easily
separate them. E.g., a cardboard box with a plastic
liner, make the liner easily removable. RAM will rate
you much higher (possibly each part gets its own
rating, rather than the whole thing downgraded).
• Data Completeness: Internally, ensure you’re not
defaulting to Red simply due to missing info. For
example, if you don’t bother to specify the plastic type
of a component in your submission, it might default
to Red. By diligently providing all data, you maximize
your chance of a better (Amber/Green) rating and
avoid unnecessary fees.
