2. Product & Service Innovation
EPR might spur you to develop new products or services:
• Reusable Packaging Services: If you’re a logistics 昀椀rm, you could
introduce or expand reusable packaging offerings (e.g. tote boxes,
pallet pooling systems). While you might become responsible for
those under EPR as a service provider, if they truly reduce single-use
packaging, you could structure it such that clients see net savings
(less one-way packaging to pay for). And if you can manage end-of-life
of those reusables in a closed loop, you might reclaim some fees.
• Take-Back Programs: Producers could start take-back schemes
for their packaging (for instance, collecting and reusing boxes or
containers from customers). Not only can this earn you consumer
goodwill, but if you are directly facilitating recycling, you might offset
some of your fees and reduce your overall tonnage placed on market.
A 3PL or co-packer might also differentiate by saying, “We pack
your products in a way that minimizes your EPR fees”, effectively a
value-added service. Indeed, some ful昀椀lment providers have started
advising clients on packaging choices to optimize costs under EPR.
